PUBLIC NOTICE NAVAL AIR STATION FALLON, NEVADA FIVE-YEAR REVIEW December 2019 The United States Department of the Navy (DON) has completed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) Five-Year Review for the Landfill Operable Unit (LFOU), Southern Operable Unit (SOU), Northern Operable Unit (NOU), and Installation Restoration Program (IRP) Sites 5, and 18. The LFOU comprises IRP Sites 20, 21, and 22; SOU comprises IRP Sites 1, 14, and 16; and the NOU comprises IRP Sites 2, 3, and 4. The DON conducted the Five-Year Review in accordance with the requirements of CERCLA Section 12(c). Protectiveness of the remedy was determined through document and data review, interviews and site inspections. The DON found that the remedies for the LFOU, NOU, and IRP Site 5 are protective of human health and the environment. A protectiveness determination for IRP Site 18 could not be issued because land use controls for this Site are under development. Implementation of land use controls will enhance human health and environmental protectiveness. The results of the Five-Year Review determined that the protectiveness determination should be deferred for the SOU. The SOU will be studied further and a final protectiveness statement for the SOU will be issued in a Five-Year Review Addendum. In accordance with the DON Five- Year Review Policy, a Five-Year Review Addendum will be completed within one year of the signature date for this five-year. The next Five-Year Review for the LFOU, SOU, NOU, and IRP Sites 5, and 18 will be completed by September 2024.
